Lexus History
Lexus is the luxury vehicle division of the Japanese automaker Toyota. The Lexus brand is marketed in more than 70 countries and territories worldwide and is Japan’s largest selling maker of premium cars. Lexus originated from a corporate project to develop a new premium sedan, which was code-named the F1, beginning in 1983. This culminated in the launch of the Lexus LS – which is still manufactured to this day – in 1989. Subsequently, the automaker added sedan, coupe, convertible, and SUV models.
Another aspect of the relationship between Toyota and Lexus is that most Lexus vehicles are produced in Japan, with a majority of the manufacturing occurring at Toyota plants in Tahara, Aichi, Chubu, and Miyata. Since the 2000s, Lexus has experienced increased sales outside of the United States, which is its largest market. The brand has expanded to new regions and debuted a fleet of hybrid vehicles as it looks toward the future.
